Abstract

This thesis analyzes the impact of racial signifiers in social discourse on the configuration of identifications in young Afro-Ecuadorian adults, arguing that racialization leaves traces on psychic life, affecting how the subject names themselves, positions themselves in the social bond, and inhabits their body. In accordance with this, the specific research objectives are oriented towards describing the forms of naming and modes of enunciation involved in experiences of racialization, identifying social signifiers and processes of internalization, and examining movements of identification and resignification in the face of stereotypes and practices of exclusion from a qualitative approach within the interpretive paradigm, with a phenomenological design, in order to understand in depth how racialization is experienced and given meaning by Afro-Ecuadorian people. The results show that racialization acquires nuances according to the place of socialization and the sociocultural composition of the environment; forms of naming, agents, modes of enunciation, and attributed stereotypes are identified. The participants' narratives reveal emotional effects, internalization processes, and tensions with their own body image, along with movements of identity redefinition in the face of racialized discourses; these narratives stem from reflection on the unconscious reproduction of such ideas and the experiences that allow them to question them.
