Abstract

At present, respect for and awareness of cultural heritage have experienced a significant deterioration, which has resulted in desolation, abandonment, and a lack of interest in spaces that once played a crucial role in the development of the city. From Guayaquil. A tangible example of this is the case of the Barrio del Astillero, which was relevant from 1900 to 1940. Aware of this situation, the present study was born from the agreement with the National Institute of Cultural Heritage (INPC) for which the guidelines established to focus on delineating its pertinent background in order to substantiate the need to declare heritage of the city of Guayaquil. In addition, a comparative analysis was carried out using heritage declaration documents approved in various neighborhoods in Ecuador to identify the essential elements that contributed to a neighborhood being recognized as cultural heritage. As part of the investigation, the historical process of the site was studied through bibliographic information, visits to the study area and recording of the oldest houses in order to demonstrate the tangible and intangible characteristics. Therefore, it was demonstrated that the neighborhood has the necessary potential to be declared a cultural heritage, due to its history and relevance in the history of the city that represents part of the historical memory of Guayaquil due to its urban, architectural, social and commercial aspects..
