Abstract

INTRODUCTION: the nutritional status in population groups of pregnant women has a significant impact during weight, the health of newborns, which is influenced by various factors among the most important: nutrition, the health of the mother, pregnancy and her gain of weight. Among the indicators that help to evaluate the nutritional status of pregnant women were anthropometric markers such as: weight, height and body mass index, biochemical markers and clinical and anthropometric data of newborns. OBJECTIVES: the objective of this work was to characterize the nutritional status of women in the gestation period and the weight of the newborn at the Liborio Panchana Sotomayor hospital in the Province of Santa Elena, attended between August and December 2021. METHODOLOGY: a descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional cohort study taking as evidence the medical records of patients who gave birth at the Liborio Panchana Sotomayor Hospital. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The determination of the nutritional status of pregnant women according to their pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and their gestational weight gain (GPG) indicate that pregnant women are in the range of normal weight, however, they gained a weight higher than recommended during the gestation period; on the other hand, the neonates were born with an average weight of 2933 grams for males and 3053 grams for females. Finally, it is concluded that despite the fact that the majority of the group of pregnant women are not within the adequate nutritional parameters, the majority of the neonates managed to be born with an adequate weight for their age.
