Abstract

The students in the Faculty of Chemical Science, Universidad de Guayaquil need to take 264 credits during their study, in order to obtain their degree. Such credits are part of the yearly curriculum, one of which is Organic Chemistry I. This subject is considered basic study within the curriculum to obtain the degree in Pharmaceutical Studies. The subject presents some degree of difficulty. The investigative work wishes to find out the different predominant styles in learning and its discipline, as well as the academic achievement the students have. This investigation began with the observation of the student´s academic achievements, through the revision of the assessment acts filed in college. The thorough revision allowed the creation of theoretical framework, emphasizing on the learning process and on the different learning styles each student has. A group of seventy-nine students were given a CHAEA questionary, to get to know the way they learn and its relation with their achievement. The results obtained through this allowed us to know that the predominant styles are both theoretical and pragmatic. The focus group technique was applied to the students, to know the learn about the way each student learns as well as the studying habits, as well as interview to the teachers to obtain more information about the teaching process and the assessment applied.
