Abstract

The present research, The Incidence of Social Imaginaries in the Configuration of Maternal Desire in Mothers with Total Visual Disability, had as its main objective to understand how these imaginaries influence the construction of maternal desire and the subjective experience of being a mother. The study was conducted under a qualitative approach and employed the descriptive method, which, through theoretical review, interviews with mothers with total visual disability, and the analysis of their testimonies, allowed for the identification of the following: the meanings that emerge regarding being a woman and a mother, the ideals of motherhood, and the anxieties experienced by these women. The results show that social imaginaries and institutional practices, being tied to patriarchal cultural remnants and stigmas around disability, have repercussions on the subjective configuration of maternal desire and the way motherhood is lived. It is concluded that mothers with total visual disability may experience exacerbated psychological suffering due to the struggles between their own desires and the social discourses that tend to deny or limit their potential to exercise motherhood, which in turn affects the construction of their identity and the place assigned to both disability and the child within the maternal bond.
