Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is defined as the presence of a progressive decrease in glomerular filtration rate of less than 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 for three months or more and/or that the patient presents renal injury manifested by the presence of albuminuria and other functional alterations. Stage V chronic kidney disease is the last step of chronic kidney disease, produced by continuous structural and functional damage. It is estimated that 850 million people in the world live with CKD, and it is estimated that by the year 2040, this disease will become the fifth leading cause of death globally. End-stage chronic kidney disease involves a severe loss of kidney function. At this stage the patient requires renal replacement therapy, which consists of 4 modalities: hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, renal transplantation and conservative treatment.
