Abstract

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) uses blockchain technology to offer financial services through open software platforms or protocols and smart contracts, built to function autonomously and decentralized without any type of intermediary. This research contemplates a non-experimental analytical development, with a qualitative approach and a cross-sectional descriptive scope, where, making use of the literary review and the theory of disruptive innovation, DeFi is analyzed as an alternative to the financial system. current. In addition, through the applied methodology, it is established as a dependent variable: disruptive innovation, and as independent variables: participants, assets, transactions and regulatory policy; then, with the collection of primary information data through experts and users of the financial system in the city of Guayaquil, compare the findings with the literature reviewed and answer the research questions. Finally, it is concluded that the new financial system proposed by DeFi has a promising proposal, based on blockchain technology, which seeks to promote its potential for efficiency, transparency, innovation, democratization and financial inclusion to completely transform finance; however, it will first be necessary to address a variety of economic, technical, operational, and policy issues that remain largely unresolved at both the national and international levels. In a way, DeFi will be both an alternative to the traditional financial system and also a new industry that will coexist or adapt to the current system; In this regard, it will be essential that both industry and governments develop a well-informed and nuanced understanding of the opportunities, risks and challenges.
