This study provides insights into how teachers and students perceive the textbook used in ESP courses at the School of Administration of an Ecuadorian Higher Education institution. This research gathered data through surveys, conducted to 13 ESP teachers and 134 students, which aimed to cover a wide variety of aspects regarding the textbook used in their classes. Moreover, a description of the textbook, based on the perspective of the author, was included in order to compare the information collected in the surveys. The results showed that the teachers and students’ perceptions towards the textbook were varied mainly because of the different goals and pursuits teachers and students have in relation to language learning. It was also found that teachers were relying on the textbook to a great extent limiting the design of their own materials to complement their instruction. Teachers and students showed interest in an ESP program that focuses on the development of productive skills along with the involvement of technology, which prompted the design of a proposal to satisfy those needs.en_US
